Marlene's Obituary
Marlene H. Smith was born in McAllen, Texas, on May 7, 1937, and passed away after a long, meaningful life defined by resilience, kindness, and a genuine love for people.
Marlene attended Abilene Christian College, where she met her husband of 17 years and the father of her six children. She later made her home in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she spent more than 50 years in her corner home in the Western Village neighborhood. There she formed many lasting friendships, spent countless hours tending her flower beds, and often walked her poodle through the neighborhood.
Marlene had a natural gift for connecting with people and could easily strike up a conversation with a stranger. She had a generous heart and a sincere desire to help others. Though she experienced many disappointments, losses, and struggles throughout her life, her deep faith sustained her. She persevered with strength, grace, and an enduring belief in kindness and compassion.
In her younger years, Marlene devoted herself to raising her children. Later, she worked as an administrative assistant for the University of Tulsa Alumni Office and for the City of Tulsa. She also built a successful cosmetic business, earning numerous awards and recognition for her dedication and work.
In 2022, Marlene moved to Edmond, Oklahoma, to be closer to family. After moving to Edmond, she experienced great joy in visits from her great-grandchildren, whose presence brought her laughter and comfort. Her family is deeply thankful for the compassionate care she received from the staff at Teal Creek Assisted Living and Legacy Hospice.
Marlene was preceded in death by her parents, Wayne and Opal Hartnett; her brother, Jack Lee Hartnett; and her triplet infant daughters.
She is survived by three of her six children: twin daughters Tracee Potter and husband Don, Stacee Walker and husband David; and Derrick Smith and wife Suzy. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Marlene will be remembered for her perseverance, her warm conversations, her beautiful flower gardens, and the kindness she extended to both friends and strangers. Her family finds comfort in knowing she is now at peace and reunited with loved ones who went before.
Marlene’s life will be honored at a family celebration on Wednesday evening, March 18th.
