James T. Mangum, Jr. "Bud's" Obituary

James T. “Bud” Mangum, Jr. passed away on September 3, 2021, after a short battle with COVID. He was born December 22, 1945, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to James T. and Wanda Mangum. Bud was part of the 1964 graduating class at NW Classen High School and attended the University of Oklahoma. Bud began his work career early in construction – his passion for construction was learned on the job and mostly under the tutelage of his father and grandfather – later joining his father’s company, Mangum Building Company. His other positions were with J.J. Cook Construction, Mangum Building Company (under his leadership), Lippert Brothers, and Shiloh Enterprises.

Bud thrived off the adrenaline during the bid process and exceled in the industry. Every fiber of the industry was in his bones, and he had every tool you could ever want and could fix or construct anything. He taught his children to have a stronger work ethic than anyone else, to be tough in business, to never to take no for an answer, to be passionate, know right from wrong, be loyal, show kindness and to see the good in others.

Bud had a big part in Oklahoma development. Some of the projects he was most proud of were Children’s Hospital / University Hospital, Presbyterian Hospital Cancer Care Unit and Outpatient addition, Myriad Gardens, Aquaticus (concrete work for dolphin enclosure), and many churches, surgical centers / hospitals, universities, military installations, and industrial projects – far too many to list.

Bud and Judy reconnected and found love later in life. This time was a very happy and special time in Bud’s life as they were best friends, laughed, and loved life. Bud loved his daughters and was their encourager in everything they attempted, from ballet, gymnastics, softball to finally settling on tennis. His zest for his job, children, friends, and family was over the top. A true friend to those who knew him. He joined the Phi Lambda Epsilon (Phi Lambs) while at NW Classen and found a brotherhood that survives to this day. He loved his fellow members and they loved him.

Bud was one of the strongest people around. He was a survivor of cancer, heart surgery, and many other procedures. He fought with grace, courage, positive attitude, humor, a complete faith in Christ, and love for his church and fellow members. Through Bud’s faith, he had been ready and excited to meet the Lord for a long time.

Bud is survived by his wife, Judith Dorney Mangum, his daughter Kelly Duke (Charles), sister Nikki Pratt (Jack), brother Clay Mangum (Janice), grandchildren Jack Tyler Mangum, Dillon Long, Aiden Duke, beloved nieces and nephews and extended family Eric and Candace Long and Diana and Jake Bramhall. Bud was predeceased by his parents James T and Wanda Mangum and daughter Tracy Mangum.

A celebration of life service will be held at 10:00am on Friday, October 1st, in the Chapel at Crossings Community Church, 14600 Portland Avenue, Oklahoma City, OK 73134. Masks are requested to be worn.

Memorial donations in Bud’s name may be made to charities benefitting the health and well-being of children, cats, and dogs. Or please give to a charity of your choice.
