Freeda Mae Johnson was born in Eva, Oklahoma at their farm home on November 29, 1926 to William Robert and Buena Vista (Yarbrough) Johnson. She was an only child. She attended a rural grade school during the dust bowl years. The dust would be so bad that the students had to shake their papers before they could write on them. She graduated from grade school at the age of 12, and attended high school, in Guymon and then Goodwell. After graduation, she started college, but was recruited to teach school. She was 17 years old, and she began her career teaching 36 twelve year olds in a one-room classroom. When Bill returned from World War II, they became engaged, and married after she finished college in 1947 in Goodwell, Oklahoma.
After Brent was born in 1950 and Becky in 1952, she started teaching English and Language Arts at Texhoma High School in 1955 and continued in that position until 1983, also serving on many extracurricular school activities.
Freeda loved to sew, knit, needlepoint, cook, play golf, fish, play cards, play the piano and snow ski, and especially loved her retirement years spent in the mountains at Angel Fire, New Mexico
