The middle child of Virginia Ford and Frederick Redding Hood, Dick was born on May 27th, 1932, brother to Frederick and Carol, his sister.
Dick was an avid World War II historian, a naturalist, and a talented artist of watercolors and oils. He loved the natural world, especially birds and other wildlife, which were frequent subjects of his paintings.
He served with distinction in the United States Army in the years following the end of World War II.
On July 2nd, 1961, he married Gail Lynn Barnes in Pueblo, CO. He and his wife returned to Oklahoma City to live in the neighborhood surrounding Edgemere Park, where he had grown up.
Dick loved Edgemere Park. He and his dog, Scruffy, were as much a part of Edgemere Park as were the trees, the grass, and the trail. He and Scruffy developed deep and lasting friendships with their park neighbors, Nicole Bondurant, Nichole Poole, Moira Lynch, Ron Rolen, John Thompson, and many others.
Preceded in death by his wife, Gail, his parents and his brother, Fred, Dick is survived by his sister, Carol Hood Pierce; his daughter Sandra Hinz and husband Michael of Gig Harbor, WA; son Christopher and wife Holly of Yukon, OK, son Michael of Oklahoma City, OK; four grandchildren, Ashley, Alex, Garrett, and Hayley, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the OKC Animal Shelter, OK Humane Adoption Center, ASPCA, and to the Greater Oklahoma City Parks & Trails foundation to help preserve the natural beauty of the park he loved so very much.
