Nancy's Obituary

DEMUTH, Nancy Carol, age 87, of Oklahoma City, died May 22, 2022 in her assisted living facility room in Oklahoma City, OK. She was born on October 14, 1934 in Lawrence, KS to Eldon Wilbur Smith and Inez Iva Mohler Smith. The extended Mohler Family was a huge family in Douglas County, KS area and she spent her childhood and teenage years growing up with the closeness of constant family gatherings of this extended family who she remained close to and in regular contact with until her health prevented her. Nancy graduated from Lawrence High School in Lawrence, KS in 1952. She attended the University of Kansas where she was in the Tri-Delta Sorority and then transferred to the Barnes Hospital School of Nursing in St. Louis, MO and was a graduating member of the Class of Sept. 1955. Nancy was immensely proud of her career as a Registered Nurse and worked in that capacity at hospitals in Lawrence, KS, Dallas, TX, Parsons, KS and both the original and current Mercy Hospitals in OKC, OK. She married David M. “Dave” Demuth on April 16, 1960 in Lawrence, KS and their two children were born there, Thomas “Tom” in 1961 and Gay Lynn in 1964. In addition to her nursing career, she and Dave owned and operated funeral homes in Parsons, KS, Blackwell, OK and Tonkawa, OK. In 1970 they moved to Oklahoma City, OK and purchased the funeral home here. Nancy helped as needed at the funeral home when not working as an RN over the years until they sold the funeral home in 1997 to their son Tom. She took a break from nursing in the mid-70’s to become the billing-office manager for their Sherman-Demuth Ambulance Company in OKC. However, her passion for nursing soon drew her back and she took a position at the new Mercy Health Center in OKC and later at Westlake Nursing Center until she was forced to retire when a fall left her with both ankles broken at age 59. Nancy was an active faithful 45-year member of Quail Springs Church of Christ in OKC where she served her church family in too many areas to mention them all. As a mother of her school-aged children she volunteered as a Cub Scout Den Mother, Girl Scout Troop Leader and parent leader for youth and school sports teams. She was a lifelong bowler in many leagues having learned this social sport from her parents. She was ready to volunteer in any capacity in the organizations she was a member of including: school PTA’s, Oklahoma Christian Women’s Association, High Noon Club, OCWA Bowling League, Oklahoma Funeral Directors Association, Vintage Gardens Homeowners Association, and others. She loved spending time at Lake Tenkiller, OK with her family and hosted many huge family reunions and friend gatherings at her lake house there and these reunions and gatherings are still remembered fondly by so many today as they are reflecting upon her death. Nancy continued her legacy of support when she became a grandmother. She rarely, if ever, missed a sporting event, band concert or contest, school or church activity or award ceremony for her four grandchildren. When she became a divorcee at age 67, she did not let this deter her active life as she remained busy in all areas of her life that have been mentioned until her health forced her to enter an assisted living center 3 years ago where she kept up her social activeness until the pandemic lockdown put an end to that.

She is survived by her son, Tom Demuth and daughter-in-law, Kellie of OKC; her daughter, Gay Lynn McRay and son-in-law, Mark of Chickasha, OK; brother, Robert “Bob” Smith of Lawrence, KS; granddaughter Natalie Parker and grandson-in-law Travis of Mustang, OK; grandson Austin McRay and granddaughter-in-law Emily of Edmond, OK; granddaughter Pali Stallings and grandson-in-law Thorne III of OKC, OK and granddaughter Paden Demuth of Frisco, TX. Also, 3 great-grandchildren with another one on the way and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will be present to receive visitors on Wednesday, May 25 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Demuth Funeral Home. Nancy’s funeral service will be on Thursday, May 26, 2022 at 11:00 AM at the Demuth Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in OKC, OK.
