Joseph's Obituary

Joseph Garth Billletter passed away Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2024, at the age of 94. Affectionately known as Joe or Garth, he was born Jan. 30, 1930, in Montezuma, Iowa, the oldest child of the late George and Sara Billetter. He attended Roosevelt High School in the Bronx, N. Y., where he was a member of the marching band. After a couple of practice marriages, he found the one true love of his life when he married Doris Mills of Bethany, Okla. They were married for 29 years until Doris predeceased Garth on Dec. 12, 2012; and he missed her every day until they were reunited again in heaven.

Garth served with the Marines as a reservist and then in the active Army from 1952 to 1953 (when he served in the Korean War, earning the Bronze Star) and then in the Army Reserves until 1961.

Garth was skilled as a master machinist and worked with several companies affiliated with the Lighthouse for the Blind. He designed machinery that could be used safely, an important feature for the visually impaired obtaining government contracts.at competitive rates.

He was a member of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior where he enjoyed good friends and singing in the/choir.

Garth is survived by his stepson Gary Mills of Bethany, Okla., and stepdaughter Susan Mills of Dallas, Texas, by sons, Steven and his wife Janet of Lumberton, Miss., and Paul of Clermont, Fla., a brother David and his wife Linda of Kyle Texas., six nephews and five nieces, and former wives Joann (deceased) and Gladys.

Garth was loved and his warm smile and positive attitude were infectious. His love of Jesus was his strength. In the last few days of his life, we shared a heartfelt moment listening to him recite the 23rd Psalm from memory. Garth was a good brother and friend. He led a long, adventurous life; and he will be missed.

A memorial service will be held at Lutheran Church of the Savior in Bethany, OK on Thursday, December 5, 2024 at 11:00 A.M.
