Barbara's Obituary


Barbara J Duer of Oklahoma City died June 8th, 2021, in her new home at Quail Ridge Assisted Living Home. Born March 30, 1943, in Oil City PA to Lillian & Eugene Stover. Barbara grew up in Oil City. Barbara was married to Ronald P Aikens from April 1962 until July 1980. She remarried Wesley Duer in February 1990 and was with him until his death in 1998. Barbara resided in Oklahoma City since 1977. Barbara was mother to two boys, Brian, and Curtis. Barbara was a surgical Nurse of Baptist Hospital 1983 – 1994. She became a home health nurse and studied for her master’s degree after which she became a nursing professor at Rose State University. Barbara retired in 2018.

Barbara was loved by many friends, neighbors, and colleagues. She was generous with her loving care for everyone and was always willing to help others in need. She enjoyed several hobbies including knitting and quilting. She loved to walk and ride bike. She traveled frequently to visit family in Pennsylvania, Kansas, and Alaska where she participated in family hiking trips and ensured her grandchildren enjoyed nature and glacier tours as well as sports and music. Barbara was student of Christian theology and visited various Christian churches before committing her faith to The Buddha of Compassion. Most recently Barbara studied with the Kadampa Meditation Center in Texas. During Covid 19 Barbara attended many meetings via virtual meetings. Barbara was a passionate and accomplished musician and performer. She played piano, guitar, banjo, and accordion. She was an active member of the Accordion Club and The Oklahoma Senior Cabaret.

Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, Lillian and Eugene Stover, her husband Wesley Duer, and her son Curis Aikens. She is survived by her brother Kenny Stover and his family, her son Brian Aikens and his wife LuAnn, grandchildren Ryan, Shawn, Doug, Liz, Katie, Derrik and Samantha and nine great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Messiah Lutheran Church at 3600 Northwest Expressway, Oklahoma City in the prayer chapel from 1-3pm, Saturday June 12, 2021. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in the name of Barbara Duer to your favorite charity organization.
