Sue's Obituary
Sue Von Coyer passed away, Wednesday, March 18, 2026 at Iris Memory Care in Oklahoma City. She was born August 7, 1929 in Pawhuska, Oklahoma to John and Iris Gorman. Her early years in Pawhuska were spent close to much extended family providing many fond and lasting memories. She graduated from Midwest City High School in 1947 and Oklahoma A&M in 1949 with a two year degree. After college she married Forrest Horne, who died tragically at the age of 27. Shortly after, the young widow started working at W. R. Johnston Insurance Agency in OKC. There she met and married Roy Don Coyer in 1953. After a honeymoon in New Orleans the new couple bought a home near Hilldale Elementary and proceeded to have a family. Sue and Don raised their four sons, Scott, Brad, Kirk and Bryan, all of whom eventually became good citizens. They all credit her example of kindness, joy, and unbreakable love for shepherding them into adulthood to raise families of their own. In 1959-60 she worked in the Bellmon campaign as a Bellmon Belle and helped elect the first Republican governor in Oklahoma. About the same time, Sue and Don found a church home at Calvin Presbyterian where she attended and served faithfully for the next 50 years. Sue also served as a volunteer at Presbyterian Hospital for many years where she received a pin for 10,000 hours of service long before she retired from her duties. She once met Richard Nixon in Ponca City where she welcomed him to a fundraiser at a supporter’s home. She was a guest at the White House on two different occasions, once in the 50’s with a group of associates, and the second time around 2006 at a dinner with the first lady to honor the Texas Western Miners Basketball Championship team and the movie about that pivotal year, Glory Road. Sue’s sister, Mary, was married to the Miners’ legendary basketball coach, Don “Bear” Haskins. Sue was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Don, her wonderful sister, Mary, and her oldest son Scott. She is survived by her sons Brad (Kelly), Kirk, and Bryan (Jean), as well as a number of grandchildren, one great granddaughter and several nieces and nephews. It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to this wonderful lady, and lady is truly the right word for her. Her love and joy guided her daily in every decision, and is likely why she lived to the age of 96. This world, and the people whose lives Sue touched, was made better and more special for having known her. Those of us who were so fortunate, look forward to seeing her again one day. We thank God for giving us this precious lady. Memorial services will be held at 10 am on Friday, April 10, 2026 at St. Luke’s Methodist Church, 222 NW 15th Street, Oklahoma City.
