Mary's Obituary


Mary Sue Mayo Utley died at her home in Oklahoma City on Friday, April 11, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Gordon Texas on September 20, 1940, and attended Gordon School, graduating Salutatorian of her class in 1959. She also attended Carroll Hill in Grapevine Texas in 1956 and Freer High School in Freer Texas in 1958. After graduation, she moved to Dallas and worked downtown for American Insurance. She lived in a boarding house where she met her husband, Bob. They married in 1961 and lived briefly in Phoenix, Arizona, Carey N C, and Wichita Falls, Texas, before settling in Oklahoma City in 1968. She was a homemaker, and she and Bob were diligent volunteers for the Greater Metropolitan Library System of Oklahoma City for over twenty years. Her selfless dedication to the community was a testament to her character. She was a member of All Souls Episcopal Church in Oklahoma City.  She was an artisan and produced hundreds of beautiful, decorated eggs with intricate details for special occasions. She enjoyed sharing her crafts with her family and friends. She is survived by her husband of almost sixty-four years, Robert (Bob) Utley, son Bruce (Marylene)of Marietta, Georgia; son David of Montrose, Colorado, granddaughter Jordan Utley Tinsley (Sam)of Bolton, England, two sisters, Wanda Thornton of Gordon and Pam McQueary (Eddie)of Strawn and many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.  Also, her precious friends, Tiger and Sabina Huddleston of Oklahoma City, survive her. She was preceded in death by six siblings: Mozelle Terry (Aubrey), Lucille McGraw, Ann Finch (Bruce), Edna Agee (Otto), Janie Scarbrough (DeLayne), and brother-in-law Troye Thornton and a dear and precious friend, Vivian Hall of Oklahoma City. There will be a graveside service in Gordon at a later date. Anyone wishing to donate in her memory should choose their favorite charity or Care Animal Rescue, P.O. Box 353, Mingus, Texas 76463. She was a blessing and loved by many, and she will be greatly missed. Her passing has left a void that can never be filled in our lives.
